Faced with the persistent problem of too many injuries to the staff that maintains and services their beautiful campus, Loyola Mary-mount University (LMU) went looking for a specialist. What they found was a unique safety company, Bridge Safety Consultants that provides safety training custom tailored to each job on campus, and combines it with a safety achievement plan that encourages employees to consider the role that behavior plays in staying injury-free, and offers rewards and recognition for achieving safety goals. The results have been very positive.
Pepper-dine University was the first school to engage the Bridge Safety Consultants team, and the applause from the first safety meetings caused two administrators to rush to the meeting rooms to see what they were missing. The key to safety is getting employees involved, so their safety meetings engaged the employees, and had them participating and actually enjoying themselves. Having a dynamic safety program also carried a message to everyone in the Pepper-dine Community on what a high priority the University placed on safety.
Safety from the top down is important to set the tone, but it’s the employees who make the final determination. A large hotel near LAX thought that their union problem meant they were destined to live with a high claim rate and increased workers’ comp costs but in the first full year of the safety program, injuries fell by more than 70%. The safety training was tailored to their needs, and recognition and rewards came from the management team. Once employees felt appreciated, they made safety their own.
